What Is black Tie?

So what is meant by a black tie event and what should you wear. Here are a few helpful tips that may make the experience a little easier.

First off you don’t have to wear a black tie, it is just the traditional way of describing a dinner suit and a dinner suit is normally worn with a bow tie. Many years ago the only option would have been black for the bow tie with a dinner suit but over the years this changed to now include any variety of colour, pattern or design. There is really no right or wrong on colour or pattern. For those unaccustomed to these events the plain black bow is usually the way to go as it still the most popular by a long way.

First off is the budget so what do you want to spend? We all know you can pay thousands for suits but also with the rise in budget suits you can now get them from around £50. Masonic suits

What is a masonic suit ? This is a question we have been asked at www.mens-suits-online.co.uk for many years. It is basically two pieces from a black suit (the jacket and the waistcoat) with a the trousers changed from the matching pair to a pair of striped trousers.

As with most things there are a lot of qualities around and generally you get what you pay for. We find the range from Scott by The Label to be the perfect compromise between price, quality and fit.

The Advantages Of Mix and Match Suits

Here is a guide from www.mens-suits-online.co.uk that may help in you choosing your mix and match suit.

So what is mix and match? Everyone has heard of made to measure. This is where you can buy a suit made specifically for you and your measurements. Problem is this comes with a high cost and when done properly usually involves multiple fittings to make sure it is right which can take months. In the off the peg suit world you don’t usually have that kind of flexibility as all suit manufacturers have a different idea of the build of “Mr Average”.

Wash or dry clean?

Not long ago a washable suit was unheard of but now for some firms it is becoming more and more common place. One such firm is Brook Taverner who has launched a washable cotton/linen suit.

With most wool suits and some linings machine wash just isn’t practical. The fabrics are too delicate and the linings are constructed in such a manner that if they shrink from washing the cut of the suit and the look of the suit are ruined.

Light Suits, Linen or Not?

With the better weather in Spring/summer (hopefully!) customers thoughts start turning to lighter weight fabrics.  Many years ago you would buy a heavy weight suit for the winter and a lightweight suit for the summer, but with most fabrics being fairly light now that isn’t necessary. Quality isn’t just defined by how heavy the cloth is any more and more and more buildings have either air conditioning or good heating so the suit isn’t just to keep you warm!

Mix and Match Suits

When you buy a suit most manufacturers make them with what is called a 6 inch drop. This means that the trouser size is about 6 inches smaller than the jacket size. So for example if you were to buy a suit with a 40" chest you would get a 34" waist, a 46" chest would come with a 40" waist and so on.

If these are your sizes, great, nice and simple, unfortunately in the real world it isn’t that straight forward. Apart from the fact you may not be that size, different manufacturers have different fits so you could be ok in one make but not another.
